Charlotte Michel studied biology before deciding to change the world by reinventing it. Getting off the bus on a Friday evening, she decided to go into film, and left the Lyon area for Paris. After studying at the Ecole Louis Lumière (class of 2010), specializing in special effects, she left for a semester at the International Film School in Cuba.
Her first short film as director of photography (Mila Caos by Simon Paetau) was shot in Cuba in Super 16 mm. It was screened at New York's MoMA and at the Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight. She photographed Alexandre Moisescot's independent feature Sans Déconner.
She took part in two documentary shoots in India, first for an Indian production in 2011, then for French television in 2013. By chance (or curiosity), she has also shot in Morocco, Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany, Spain, Reunion Island, Central African Republic, Madagascar and Qatar. She works in both film and digital.
Charlotte likes to understand faces and play with colors. She invents a coherent style and a rich palette for each project. For her, a successful shot is one in which she forgets that she's the one operating the camera: when the technique becomes transparent to the intentions. In this way, all the energy and work on the set is transmitted to the audience.
